Athenry

Conservation | Commercial / Development

The former walled garden of Athenry House formed the site for this proposed supermarket. This challenging site is located in Athenry town centre within high stone walls and adjacent to a dovecote which secludes it from the main street. Our analysis of the existing town streetscape, its history and Athenry House, generated an urban design strategy for the site – creating an opportunity to link existing areas of the town, open up and frame views to the town walls and Athenry House, while generating a new street edge to a new link street, and revealing the walled garden and its dovecote and other features to the town.
We prepared an Architectural Heritage and Architectural Conservation Area Impact Report to assess the impact of the design on the character and views to and from Athenry House, the walled garden, the dovecote, the Town Walls and historic streetscape. Our Retail Design Statement submitted with the application, demonstrated how the design of the 1760sq.m foodstore complied fully with principles set out in the Retail Design Manual, guidance for Planning Authorities..
