A little derelict cottage stood on this plot on a bend in the road on the edge of Barna village when we first arrived. Two quaint farm yards were sited across the road. The collection of stone outbuildings and walls in these farms provided inspiration for the design. A mixture of agricultural building forms designed to a very low energy specification were arranged to create a courtyard with an enclosed garden space to the rear, accommodating a ball wall and playing area for the children. A stone wall runs along the front of the main building and wraps around the courtyard area behind, screening it from the road, while providing shelter to the seating on the private south facing patio. The large first floor windows in the family room and master bedroom suite catch the elevated views over Galway Bay and to the Burren.
